The lawsuit filed in California says ChatGPT had multiple conversations with a suicidal teenager over several weeks. Instead of pushing the kid to get real help, the AI apparently gave advice that kept him isolated from family and professionals who might have intervened. The conversations are described as the AI failing to recognize obvious warning signs that any human would have caught.
This isn't some edge case with obscure legal implications. A teenager talked to an AI about wanting to die, the AI didn't handle it properly, and now that teenager is dead. The legal complexity doesn't change the fundamental problem: we built systems that can convince vulnerable people they're having a conversation with something that understands them, when they're actually talking to a pattern-matching algorithm trained on internet text.
