Setting Up Continue (And Why It Takes Longer Than You Think)

The docs say "quick 5-minute setup." That's horseshit. Basic installation? Sure, 10 minutes. Getting it configured so it doesn't drive you insane? Plan on spending a weekend.

Step 1: The Easy Part (5 Minutes)

VS Code: Install the Continue extension from the marketplace. Click, wait, done. The Continue icon appears in your sidebar.

JetBrains: Install from the JetBrains Plugin Marketplace. Works with IntelliJ, PyCharm, WebStorm, etc. Also takes 2 minutes.

CLI (Beta): There's a command-line version if you hate yourself. Needs Node.js. I've literally never seen anyone use this in the wild.

Step 2: Configuration Hell (1-3 Hours)

This is where the fun begins. Continue needs to know which models to use, and the config file is JSON that will make you question your life choices.

Cloud Models - The Expensive Route

First you need API keys. OpenAI costs $0.002 per 1K tokens, which sounds cheap until you get your first $127 bill. Claude costs more but actually thinks before it codes.

Pro tip: Start with OpenAI GPT-4o-mini for testing. It's cheap and works well enough to validate your setup before committing to expensive models.

Local Models - Free but Painful

Ollama setup is "straightforward" if you enjoy pain. Models are 4-7GB downloads that take forever, and you need 16GB+ RAM or your laptop turns into a jet engine. Popular ones are CodeLlama, DeepSeek Coder, and Codestral. Good luck.

Once you get Codestral or DeepSeek working, they're decent. But they're slow as hell compared to cloud models. Great if you can't send code to OpenAI, terrible if you have ADHD. Quantized models are faster but dumber.
